What is the 8th Pay Commission?
In India, a Pay Commission is formed approximately every 10 years to revise the salary structure of central government employees and pensioners. Each Pay Commission recommends a fitment factor, which is used to calculate the new basic pay.
- 6th Pay Commission fitment factor – 1.92.
- 7th Pay Commission fitment factor – 2.57.
- 8th Pay Commission expected fitment factor – 1.92 to 2.57 .
The higher the fitment factor, the higher the salary hike.

Central government employees are divided into 18 pay levels
- Level 1: Group D employees
- Level 18: Cabinet Secretary (highest post)
Between Level 1 and Level 18, employees fall under Group A, B, C, and D categories.
