PAN – Aadhaar Link: deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar is fast approaching, and taxpayers now have very little time left. As per the Income Tax Department, December 31, 2025 is the final date to complete PAN–Aadhaar linking after paying the applicable late fee. If this process is not completed on time, unlinked PAN cards will become inoperative, which can create major financial problems.
According to earlier media reports, including Hindustan Times, failure to link PAN with Aadhaar may also lead to disruption in important services such as filing income tax returns, opening bank accounts, investing in mutual funds, or carrying out high-value financial transactions.
Who Needs to Link PAN with Aadhaar?
Income Tax Department has clearly stated that all existing PAN holders who were allotted PAN on or before July 1, 2017, must link it with Aadhaar. This facility is available to both registered and unregistered users on the income tax e-filing portal.
For new PAN card applicants, Aadhaar-based verification is already mandatory at the time of application. However, older PAN holders still need to complete the linking process separately.
What Happens If You Don’t Link?
If PAN and Aadhaar are not linked by December 31, 2025 –
- Your PAN will become inoperative.
- You may face issues in banking, investments, and tax-related services.
- Higher TDS/TCS may be deducted on financial transactions.
- Refunds and return processing may get delayed.

How to Link PAN with Aadhaar (Step-by-Step)
- Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/ and log in.
- Go to Profile and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’
- Enter PAN and Aadhaar details.
- Proceed to e-Pay Tax and select payment under Other Receipts.
- Pay the applicable late fee through UPI or bank website.
- After payment, complete the linking process on the portal
